Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Decree or Power is a night when Allah showers His Mercy and Blessings on His sincere and faithful servants. It is a night, when Allah looks down at His servants in a special way. And we (the servants) are more inclined to worship Him and seek forgiveness from Him, in these last ten days as well.

Allah states in the Holy Qur'an in Chapter 97, Al-Qadr:
Surely, We sent it down on the Night of Destiny. [97:2]
And what should make thee know what the Night of Destiny is? [97:3]
The Night of Destiny is better than a thousand months. [97:4]
Therein descend angels and the Spirit by the command of their Lord - with every matter. [97:5]
It is all peace till the rising of the dawn. [97:6]

From the above verses we are told that this night is greater than a thousand months. Although it doesn't say greater than, we know that 1000 is the highest numerical figure in Arabic, thus signifying greater than 1000 months. On this night, angels descend upon the Earth.

This concept can be understood better through the words of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II (ra) who writes in Tafseer-e-Kabeer that [97:5] means:
"...the Angels of God descend to meet and satisfy every religious need and to remove all obstacles and impediments from the way of the expansion and spread of the new Message." [Tafseer-e-Kabeer, Page 2856]

The Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) said that an important point found in Surah Al-Qadr is that Laylatul Qadr could also mean that when mankind is in severe need of Allah, He responds to this need by sending a new reformer. This can be linked to the following saying of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him):
"Verily God will continue for ever to raise for this Ummat in the beginning of every century one who Will restore for it its faith." [Abu Dawud, Kitabul Fitan]

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) has also stated:
"Whosoever establishes the prayer on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards then all his past sins will be forgiven." [Bukhari]
and:
"Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." [Bukhari]

It is necessary for each and every believer to increase his/her worship during the last ten days of Ramadan and pray sincerely to benefit from the night of Laylatul Qadr. The reason that we are not told which night Laylatul Qadr falls on, is simply so that we worship Allah all of the ten days, rather than just the one night (Laylatul Qadr). We must also remember that we should worship Allah all through Ramadan and not only the last ten days in order to experience Laylatul Qadr.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) would spend the last ten days striving hard in the worship of Allah with an unimaginable effort. He directed his family to do the same. This was the model he established for us, and we must strive to do the same in our homes.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) told Hadhrat Aisha (ra) to recite the following prayer on Laylatul Qadr:

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tu hibul 'afwa fa 'fu 'anni
O Allah! You are the Great Pardoner, You love to pardon. Hence I seek Your pardon.
[Ibn Maja, Kitabul Duaa]

We must remember that the concentration on worship in search of Laylatul Qadr in the last ten days of Ramadan to make up for a lifetime worth of worship takes away from the objective of our creation (to worship Allah). Also, if one believes that he has experienced Laylatul Qadr, and therefore does not need to worship Allah anymore is misled. In fact, experiencing this night makes one an even more committed servant of Allah.

Allah reminds us each year in Ramadan to seek beneficence from this new day and to continue to raise our levels of spirituality. May we each engage in the sincerest worship of Allah during these last ten days of Ramadan to gain utmost blessings, Ameen!

During Ramadan, I've noticed that many people tend to drink glasses upon glasses of water at Sehri and then Iftar. Many times during Sehri, those who are fasting try to drink as much water as they can before Fajr. Whereas, during Iftar, those who are opening their fast drink glasses of water to get rid of their thirst. For this reason, I wanted to redirect you to the following Hadiths:

TAKE THREE BREATHS WHILE DRINKING:

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (he used to drink in three gulps). [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

DO NOT BLOW IN YOUR DRINK:

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited us blowing in the drinking water. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Sometimes I see some litter floating about on the surface. What should I do then?" He (peace be upon him) replied, "Pour them out." Then the man said: "My thirst is not quenched with one draught." Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Then put away the cup from your mouth (in between gulps), and take breath." [Tirmidhi]

AVOID DRINKING STANDING UP:

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's apostle (peace be upon him) disapproved the drinking of water while standing up. [Sahih Muslim]

WHOEVER SERVES THE WATER SHOULD BE THE LAST TO DRINK:

Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "He who serves other with drinking water should be the last to drink himself." [Tirmidhi]

DO NOT DRINK WHILE LYING DOWN & DRINK WITH TWO HANDS:

It was narrated from 'Asim bin Muhammad bin Zaid bin 'Abdullah, from his father, that his grandfather said:
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade us to drink while (lying) on our bellies, lapping up water, and he forbade us to drink from one hand only. He said: 'None of you should lap up water as a does does, and he should not drink water from on hand has the people with whom Allah is angry do, and he should not drink from a vessel at night without stirring it first, unless the vessel was covered. Whoever drinks from his hand when he is able to drink from a vessel, with the intention of humility, Allah will record good deeds equivalent to the number of fingers for him. It (i.e., the hand) is the vessel of 'Eisa bin Maryam, (as) when he threw away the cup and said: 'Ugh! That belongs to this world."

All of these Hadith's allow one to be thankful (say Alhamdulillah) before and after drinking the water and allow us to take time to drink. Personally, I believe that the more Hadith one knows, the more they are able to follow what Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said. By doing so, we are doing more of what pleases Allah.

I pray that we are all able to follow the Hadiths' that I've mentioned above to the best of our abilities, Ameen!

As humans, we sin. Think of it in this way, God created us as humans, not Angels. By doing so, He already knew that we would be inclined to sin and do wrong deeds. We have been created as weak, which is why we need Allah's help and support. Allah is Al-Hayyi and Al-Qayyyum. Meaning, He is the One Who brings into existence and supports what He has created. We have been told in the Qur'an to seek help from Allah:
Thee alone do we worship and Thee alone do we implore for help. [1:5]
WHAT IS ISTIGHFAR?
The root of istighfar is ghafar, meaning to cover up. Istighfar means to get strength from Allah to refrain from sin and evil, and to be able to display this strength to refrain from sin. It helps to suppress any feelings or thoughts that may distance one from Allah.

SIN AND ISTIGHFAR
We should note that sin is not a prerequisite for Istighfar. As people, we wish to make Allah happy and in order to do so we want to become perfect beings. To achieve this perfection we ask Allah for strength. Even the Prophets needed Istighfar, so that no sin should be committed. Istighfar is also needed after an evil has been done. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) brought people who had completely gone astray to the highest point of civilization through Istighfar.

In the Holy Qur'an, Istighfar is seen as drawing the strength and support of Allah which leads to attaining nearness to Allah and salvation. The Holy Qur'an states:
But surely the righteous will be in the midst of gardens and springs, receiving what the Lord will give them; for they used to do good before that. They used to sleep but a little of the night; and at the dawn of the day they sought forgiveness...[51:16-19]
This verse shows that the one who does Istighfar is doing a righteous deed and is the recipient of countless blessings. Istighfar isn't to protect one from the torment of fire rather a part of goodness. For example, if one becomes a Mohsin he is at a stage where he is unable to sin. However, them doing Istighfar isn't necessarily to protect them from Hell, rather to get the necessary strength and support from Allah so that they stay firm on the right path and don't fall into the wrong path. Only because he knows that as a human, he can easily fall weak, and needs Allah's help.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ISTIGHFAR AND REPENTANCE
Istighfar and repentance are two separate things. The strength to repent comes after one does Istighfar. This is because, until we seek strength from Allah (through Istighfar) we are unable to do anything. It is with this strength that we can then stand up and express remorse about a wrongdoing or sin.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
If anyone continuously asks pardon, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide from him where he did not reckon [Abu Dawud]
HOW TO DO ISTIGHFAR

Continuously recite Astaghfirullah - "I seek forgiveness from Allah" to abstain from doing wrong such as envy, jealousy, pride etc.

Sayyad-ul-Istighfar (Best Prayer for Seeking Forgiveness)
Hadhrat Buraida relates the Holy Prophet (saw) said that whosoever recites this prayer morning or evening and dies on that day or that night he will enter heaven:

O Allah, You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant. And I am steadfast in Your convenant and Your promise to the best of my capability. I seek refuge in You from the evil effects of my deeds. I acknowledge Your blessings and favours. I confess my sins, so You forgive me, as there is none except You who forgives sins.

Prayer for Forgiveness and Pardon
Hadhrat Abu Musa-al-Ashari tells us of this prayer of the Holy Prophet (saw):

O Allah, forgive my mistakes, my lack of knowledge, my transgressions in my affairs and all my affairs about which know more than I do. Forgive my sins, my intentional or unintentional mistakes and my frivulous jokes. All these are my failings. O Allah, forgive my earlier or later sins. Forgive my hidden and manifest sins. You cause things to advamce and cause them to retard. You have authority over everything.

An Effective Prayer for Forgiveness

I seek forgiveness from Him, except Whom there is none worthy of worship. He is Living and Self-Subsisting. He brings others to life and sustains them. I incline towards Him and repent.

Basically, the one who resorts to Istighfar and admits his weakness to Allah becomes nearer to Him. When you continuously recur to Istighfar and turn to Allah for help, it allows you to resist evil tendencies with the help and strength given to you by Allah.

Constantly, we make the promise to reform ourselves later. Whether this be a bad habit, being better people, making a positive change in the world or practising our faith as it should be practised, we leave it off. But no one knows if we will even get to live to see tomorrow. Unfortunately, death doesn't only come to those who have reached old age, it can come to anyone at anytime regardless of race, health, religion, wealth or age.

You may have heard of young people who have suddenly passed away. They may have planned to do things that they never got to do. Our time on this Earth can prove to be very short, if we don't turn to Allah in time. Too many deaths have happened in the past year, making me stop and think. Many of these people never got to make it to old age or see their tomorrow. How many time's have we promised ourselves that we will start praying tomorrow, next week, next month or next year? How many time's have we said that we will go to the Mosque next time? How many times have we said that we will start praying and worshipping Allah when Ramadan comes around? Sadly, for many, the answer will be more than once or twice.

It was after experiencing the death of many, who hadn't made it to old age, but lived their live with a strong love for Allah in their hearts, that I began to think. I thought, if these people had planned to start worshipping Allah upon making it to old age, what would their life have been like? I then thought, if these people who are pious and righteous can pass away at such a young age, what assurance do I have that I can't? As these questions came up, I realized that something needed to change. I needed to change. And that's the day I promised myself to worship my Creator and live everyday spreading the message of Islam. I finally woke up and said, "Today I am going to change." What if I had said tomorrow I'm going to change? It scares me to think about that. This is why I constantly tell everyone to change themselves today. My heart literally skips a beat every time I talk to someone who says that they aren't ready to practise their religion, but will do so when they're older. I pray for these people because I know that no one wants to experience death without having loved God.

I know life is busy, I also know that when you have so much on your mind, you tend to forget about your purpose in life. But you need to realize this purpose, and go after it. This purpose may differ for everyone, but for myself and all the Muslims in the world, our primary goal and purpose in life is simple; to worship our Creator.

It's recently started to bother me, how often times, we take life for granted. So many of us have been blessed with so much, making us fail to realize that we may not have as many years ahead of us as we think. We forget that we aren't guaranteed to live to see old age. In reality, we may not even have next year, next month, next week, or tomorrow. I challenge you to not wait until tomorrow to change any habit that you have that Allah wouldn't be pleased with. I challenge you to tell those that you love, how much you love them. I challenge you to ask yourself this question: "If today was my last day in this world, would Allah be pleased with the that person I am?" and if the answer is no then do what you need to do, to change that answer to "Yes, InshaAllah".

It is stated in the Holy Qur'an:
[39:43] Allah takes away the souls of human beings at the time of their death; and during their sleep of those also that are not yet dead. And then He retains those against which He has decreed death, and sends back the others till an appointed term. In that surely are Signs for a people who reflect.
[10:57] He it is Who gives life and causes death, and to Him shall you be brought back.
Make a change, today. Change your habits, today. Be a better person, today. Open your eyes and realize how short this life is. Pray, before you're prayed upon. And walk to the Mosque, before you're carried there.

I pray that Allah enables all of us to realize our purpose here in life and that when our time comes to leave this world, we are ready to do so, Ameen!

Lately, I feel like the word taqwa is being used more often. Huzur (may Allah strengthen his hands) continuously stated in his Friday Sermon on July 4, 2014, that we should all aim to adopt taqwa.

Piety, God-Fearing, Righteous...these are all words that mean taqwa. However, I would say that the best word to describe taqwa is being God-concscious. This is an essential quality of a believer, and one of the central concepts in the Qur'an. Some of you may have heard the following example of taqwa: If you were to walk through a path of thorns, what would you do? You would be extremely cautious to avoid the thorns. You would protect your clothes and self from being harmed. And you would be completely aware of your surroundings while walking. This is taqwa. While walking through this dangerous journey of life, we must protect ourselves from sin so that we can complete this journey untouched by sin. In order to do this, we must understand that God is everywhere, and aware of our every action. We must also understand our relationship with Him. He is our Creator and we are His servants. As servants, we must always try to please our Creator and avoid doing anything that displeases Him. However, what makes this challenging yet rewarding is expressing such a level of alertness, when He is not actually visible. We know that Allah is not physically present or visible by our eyes. But, He is always Present and Unseen.

HOW DO YOU LOSE TAQWA?
Love of this world goes hand in hand with greed, pride, hatred and enmity towards fellow human beings. All of these traits can cause you to feel like you have power, and don't need Allah. Not being aware of Allah is what leads to these traits. This is because if you were aware that Allah dislikes such characteristics in His servants, you wouldn't adopt them.

HOW DO YOU ADOPT TAQWA?
The more aware and alert a believer is, the more he/she is able to protect him/herself from adopting these bad traits, and forgetting Allah. All of this leads to better taqwa and God-consciousness. We must demonstrate this constant alertness in every aspect of our lives, and avoid anything that will distance us from Him.

This isn't a concept that's only seen in Islam, it's also seen in other religions such as Christianity. The fear of God in order to fear displeasing Him, is a central theme in the Bible as well. And the reason for this is that if we aren't aware of God and His presence, then we won't be able to refrain from displeasing Him altogether. Think of it in this way, when a child knows that their mother is watching, they are less likely to do something that will displease her. In the same way, when a believer is aware that Allah is present and watching, they will be less likely to displease Him.

I pray that we are all able to focus on being ever-alert and hyper-vigilant of the presence of Allah, so that we may be able to please Him in all aspects of our daily lives, Ameen.

Please forgive me if I have written something that is incorrect. I am in no way an expert or scholar. Just someone who is trying to share the teachings of Islam. May Allah forgive me for any mistakes I make, Ameen.

Take a moment to ask yourself, 'Who do I hang out with the most?' for the majority of us the answer will be 'my friends' (consisting of students or colleagues). We share the majority of our life with these people. It's human nature to adapt to the lifestyle of those that we spend most of our time with in order to fit in. Unfortunately, many times we tend to adopt the negative habits of these friends. For this reason, it is important to surround ourselves with friends who will make us better people, not worse. This takes me to the following Hadith:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was reportedly asked: "Which of our companions are best?" He replied: "One whose appearance reminds you of God, and whose speech increases you in knowledge, and whose actions remind you of the hereafter."

In another Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A person is on the religion of his companions. Therefore let every one of you carefully consider the company he keeps." [Tirmidhi]

I've slowly come to realize the influence people who strive towards Allah and the people who don't, have on me. As well as, the impact I have on these people. In the past, I've had groups of people who I've considered friends, who've had no connection with Allah through any religion. It was such people that made me feel like religion wasn't important. Unfortunately, I was too interested in having friends, then caring about their religious background or character. Looking back now, I realize how lost I was and how drawn to the world I had become. Slowly, my group of friends changed to girls who had a strong love for their Creator, consisting of: A Hindu, A Buddhist and two Muslims. It was their positive and pious vibe that increased my love for Allah. Hanging around such people made me understand their faiths, as they understood mine. I no longer had to make up excuses of 'being busy' to avoid parties and mixed gender hangouts. Only because they knew my comfort level and reasoning, as I knew theirs. Just as they impacted me, I was constantly told by them, the impact I had on them. I had one Muslim friend, who wasn't overly consistent in prayers, nor did she aim to have a better relationship with Allah. However, she noticed me saying things like 'Be right back, I have to pray', 'I read in the Qur'an that...' and the simple words: InshAllah, Alhamdulillah, MashAllah and Subhanallah. Once she realized the positive impact Islam had on my life, she strived to do the same. Sometimes I would receive a message from her saying, 'Guess what? I read all five prayers today!' Seeing this excitement within her, made me glad to have been a minor influence on her bond with Allah.

Some of you may not have a tight-knit group of friends who guide you to the path of Allah. But this does not mean that you will never be able to achieve the tranquility of your heart. If we find that our companions are unable to influence us to be more mindful of Allah, then we must take on the responsibility of changing this atmosphere. We should also seek for ways of finding company that will guide us to Allah. Whether this be friends from local Masjids, religious conferences, or community groups. Make the effort!

I pray that Allah helps us all to choose for ourselves company that will remind us of Allah, Ameen!

Avoiding sin, however big or small it may be, is a habit that Islam tries to inhabit in all Muslims. We know that killing is a sin, so we avoid it. But, lying is also a sin, yet we continue to make up lies considering them smaller in rank. I believe that committing sins can easily become a habit, making them harder to avoid. For this reason I wanted to redirect all of you to the following Hadith:
"The believer sees his sins as if he is sitting at the foot of a mountain fearing that it might fall on him, while the sinner sees his sins as a fly that lands on his nose, he just waves it away." [Bukhari]

In this Hadith, the difference between the viewpoint of the believer and the sinner differ for several reasons.

The believer fears a sin like the weight of a mountain, because the heart of a believer is soft and illuminated. So seeing something that goes against what he believes will illuminate his heart, causes him distress and suffering. The metaphor of comparing a sin to a mountain shows the power of a single sin. If a mountain falls on you, you are unable to escape it or survive. Similarly, if a believer sins, that one sin will feel to him as burdening as the weight of a mountain. The believers' fear of Allah will cause him to do everything that he can to please Allah. Which is why, he will fear even the smallest of bad deeds, and his good deeds will never be enough.

On the other hand, a sinner's heart has become hard, and sins no longer hold value for him. Forgiving himself for doing a sin is as easy to him as waving away a fly. Overall, he lacks the fear of Allah in his heart, and doesn't aim to please Him.

So this Ramadan, lets try not to say the words "It's just a small sin". We should stop and think, not about the sin, but about Who it is that we've just disobeyed through the sin.

May Allah enable us all to reflect on ourselves and see even our smallest of sins as mountains, Ameen!
