Ramadan - a month that Muslims around the globe look forward to each and every year. For those of us who get to cross paths with Ramadan once again, we should be truly grateful. This means that we have been blessed with another year to live, another year to worship, another year to do good, and another year to repent! Before the start of Ramadan, it is important that we reflect on the month of blessings that is to come and determine how we can make the greatest use of it!

1. Seek Knowledge About Ramadan
Before Ramadan begins, do your research! What is Ramadan? Why is it important? What does it entail? It's vital that you seek answers to these questions and truly understand the importance of Ramadan. This way, you can ensure that you do everything that you are required to do, and refrain from anything that you are discouraged/prohibited from doing throughout the month. By reading articles or  books, and listening to videos or podcasts, you can ensure that you have the correct mindset and intentions before the start of Ramadan.

2. Make a Plan
For those of you who like routine in order to get in the habit of doing things, creating a plan is essential. Your plan could look something like this:

3 am - Wake Up, Read Nafl, and Have Sehri
4 am - Pray Fajr & Read Qur'an
5 am - Sleep
7 am - Wake Up for Work
1:30 pm - Lunch Break: Pray & Read Qur'an
6 pm - Reach Home, Pray, Read Qur'an
7 pm - Rest
8 pm - Prepare Food for Iftari
9 pm - Open Fast, Maghrib Prayer
9:15 pm - Eat, Clean, Prepare for Tomorrow
9:45 pm - Go for Taraweeh Prayers at the Mosque, Pray Ishaa
10:00 pm - Read Qur'an, Sleep

In order for a plan like this to be fruitful, you must keep it at the forefront of your mind at all times. If you don't intend to wake up for Sehri or go to Taraweeh prayers, it is likely that you will not! Our minds and bodies need to follow a schedule to successfully get things done. And the first step in getting things done is setting intentions!

3. Set Goals
With "Making a Plan' comes 'Setting Goals'. Some goals consist of:
  • Finish Holy Qur'an x1
  • Read 5 Islamic Books
  • Keep All Possible Fasts
  • Read Taraweeh Prayers at the Mosque
When you set these goals, incorporate them into your daily schedule to ensure that you achieve them! If you plan on finishing the entire Holy Qur'an, you cannot do so unless you have daily short-term goals as well. This could mean finishing 1 Part of the Holy Qur'an per day! But how can you ensure that you finish 1 Part per day? Well, you can read 4 pages after each of the 5 Prayers. By setting goals that are achievable but also push you to your limits, you can ensure that you benefit from this blessed month! If you know that it will not be possible for you to read 100% Taraweeh Prayers at the Mosque, set a goal that is realistic, but also an improvement from last Ramadan. Perhaps reading 5 Taraweeh Prayers out of 7 in a week? Whatever your goals may be, make sure they work for YOU!

4. Prepare Spiritually
We all know that Ramadan is a month of fasting, praying, reading the Holy Qur'an and increasing our knowledge, but it is important to you begin these good deeds early! You cannot expect to easily fall into the habit of waking up early, or praying all of your prayers on time, if you are not already in the habit of doing so. Get your body in the habit of doing these things now, so that when Ramadan begins your body is not in the adjusting phase, rather already in the routine phase.

5. Rid Yourself of Bad Habits
During Ramadan we must distance ourselves from bad habits such as, lying, using foul language, wasting time on movies, listening to explicit music, etc. Although Muslims should try to avoid such habits in their daily lives, it becomes even more important to do so during Ramadan. As stated above, try to get in the habit of distancing yourself from these poor habits now, so that it only becomes easier during Ramadan.

6. Stack Pantry Items
If you can, stack your pantry with items that won't go bad. This way, you won't have to go out in the heat, while fasting, to grab your groceries. Instead, you will have many pantry items, which can make your trip to the grocery store much shorter!

7. Meal Prep
Before Ramadan begins, cook staple foods and freeze them for days when you have little time or energy to cook a huge meal for either Sehri or Iftari! Freezing certain foods early will definitely help you throughout the month!

I hope that these tips are helpful for you as you prepare for Ramadan. May this Ramadan be a blessed experience for all of us, and may we extract all of the blessings that this month brings with it. May we be better Muslims by the end of this month than we are at the start, Ameen!

1. Pray Your Salat
The importance of Salat has been emphasized in the Qur'an countless times. Allah has stressed that Muslims offer Salat regularly in order to achieve the benefits that come with it.

  • Gain Nearness to Allah: With prayer, we can develop a bond with our Creator and learn to pray to thank Allah and seek help during difficult times.
  • Taqwa: Piety or righteousness is achieved through Salat. This is because Salat keeps us away from wrongdoing, ensuring that we learn to do what's right in order to please Allah.
  • Reward in the Hereafter: The Prophet (pbuh) said, "The first thing the people will be accountable for on the Day of Judgement is prayer, Allah will say to His angels: "Look at my servants prayers. Were they complete or not?" If they were complete It will be written as complete. If they were not fully complete Allah will say: "See if my servant has voluntary prayers, If he has them Allah will Say: Complete his obligatory prayers shortage with his voluntary prayers." Then the rest of his deeds will be dealt with in the same manner", (Reported by Abu Dawood).
  • Protection from Satan: Satan is an enemy of the believers and tries to stray them from their path of righteousness. Not offering prayer is actually a sign of us following Satan, whereas those who offer prayer are resisting temptation from Satan.
Thus, if we don't pray, we are not preparing ourselves for the first question Allah will ask us on the Day of Judgement. Also, we are missing out on the benefits that Salat has on us in this life.

2. Stay in a State of Wudu
It has been related in a narration from Ibn Umar that the Prophet (pbuh) said: "Whoever performs Wudu while in a state of purity, Allah writes for him on account of it ten good merits". (Tirmidhi)

Moreover, the Prophet (pbuh) said, "When any of you sleeps, Satan ties three knots at the back of his  neck. He recites the incantation at every knot: 'You have a long night, so sleep.' If he awakes and remembers Allah, one knot is loosened. If he performs Wudu' the (second) knot is loosened; and if he performs prayer, (all) knots are loosened. He begins his morning in a happy  and refreshed mood; otherwise, he gets up in bad spirits and sluggish state". (Narrated by Abu Huraira - Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Thus, it is important that we not only remain in a state of Wudu so we can pray whenever we need to and remain clean. But also, to please Allah and gain blessings from our purified state.

3. Fast
Since it is Ramadan right now, you are probably aware of the commandment of fasting and why it is important to us as Muslims. If not, you can read my post by clicking here.

It is narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet (pbuh) said that Allah said, "Every good deed of Adam's son is for him except fasting, it is for Me, and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.' Verily, the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better to Allah than the smell of musk".

While fasting, we are in a state of remembering Allah, and doing something to please no one but Allah. Allah will reward us for fasting, and so it is important to fast regularly.

4. Perform Good Deeds
Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, "Verily, those who believe and do good works - surely, We suffer not the reward of those who do good works to be lost. It is these who will have Gardens of Eternity beneath which streams shall flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade, reclining therein upon raised couches. How good the reward and how excellent the place of rest!" (Holy Qu'rna 18:31-32).

And so, it is important that we do good deeds in this world, in order to impact the lives of those less around us, and making the world a better place. But also, to gain Allah's pleasure.

5. Make Istighfar
All of us have shortcomings. All of us have done something which displeased please Allah. This is okay. We were made humans, not angels. BUT, we must ask Allah for forgiveness many times a day. We don't want to die having displeased Allah and not seeking forgiveness for it.

In the Holy Qur'an, Istighfar is seen as drawing the strength and support of Allah which leads to attaining nearness to Allah and salvation. The Holy Qur'an states:
But surely the righteous will be in the midst of gardens and springs, receiving what the Lord will give them; for they used to do good before that. They used to sleep but a little of the night; and at the dawn of the day they sought forgiveness...[51:16-19]

If you want to know more about Istighfar click here.

We must always think about death, as it is our short time in this world that will determine what happens in the Hereafter. May we all make ourselves better individuals and better Muslims who will please Allah with our actions and character, Ameen!

The atmosphere and environment of the home that you and your family spend long hours of the day and night in, can greatly influence your behaviour, habits, and family life. A stress-filled home with little remembrance of Allah is neither good for you or your family/kids. Remembering Allah during the day and night is something that we are reminded to do in the Qur'an:

To ensure that we are abiding by Allah's command, and not letting the things of this world divert our attention from Him, it is important to create a home where the remembrance of Allah and His people is given great importance.

Below are 5 simple ways to remember Allah throughout the day and create a peaceful, spiritually bliss home:

1. Designated Worship Room/Area:

Many of our homes are filled with pictures, wall-art, TVs and other distractions. Thus, setting aside a room/area of the home that has none of these distractions, rather access to the material needed to worship and remember Allah (i.e. a Prayer mat, Qur'an), is a great way to stay focused while praying or reading the Qur'an. Moreover, passing by this room/area can serve as a reminder to pray and remember Allah.

2. Islamic Library:

In the Holy Qur'an, Allah has commanded us to constantly seek knowledge. As well, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) advised us to:
'Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave'.
The only way to do this, is to have access to the resources needed for attaining this knowledge within our reach. Nowadays, so many Islamic books are available online (i.e. ebooks), and so having a hard copy is not necessary. However,  having hard copies of a few key books (i.e. prayer books, commentaries of the Qur'an, etc.) is a good idea. The attention and focus you will have on a book that's in your hand, will far exceed an electronic copy, due to several other distractions. It's also a good way to rest your eyes and write notes on the books to better understand the content. Also, if you have young children, having kids Islamic books on these shelves will teach them how to rely on these books for knowledge. Reading these books will help you gain knowledge on living a better life.

3. Written Reminders:

More often than not, we know the words to many prayers along with when they should be recited. However, we sometimes forget to recite them due to the distractions in our homes. Pasting prayers around your house is a great way to remind yourself when a prayer should be recited. By pasting them on doors, mirrors etc. you are not only reminding yourself, but also your children to remember Allah. Moreover, reading/seeing these prayers everyday will help you and your kids memorize them, if you haven't already.

4. Get Rid of Negative Noise:

Nowadays, every home has a television, laptop/tablet, and phone. Sometimes, it is important to set these aside. Turn off your drama's, music, etc. so that you and your children can communicate, and not take in the negativity that comes with these noises (i.e. swearing, vulgarity etc.).  Silence will not only let you think and be at peace with yourself, but it's also a great way to clear your mind. A substitute to the dramas/music are: Islamic podcasts, poetry, the recitation of the Holy Qur'an etc. all of which ease your stress, and create a peaceful vibe at home.

5. Lead By Example:

With all of the above said, it is very important to live by example. Read your prayers on time, recite the Qur'an, constantly pray to Allah, stay calm, don't raise your voice, etc.  By keeping yourself absorbed in the remembrance of Allah, and living your life following Allah's commands, you will be a role model for your parents, siblings, spouse and children. On the other hand, if you listen to foul music, watch inappropriate TV shows, yell, never remember Allah, and remain stressed, your home will never attain peace. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Each of you is a sheperd, and each of you is responsible for his flock...A man is a sheperd in charge of the inhabitants of his household and he is responsible for his flock; a women is a sheperdess in charge  of her husband's house and children and she is responsible for them..."
Remember, it was narrated by Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa'eed that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said
"No people sit in a gathering remembering Allah, But the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them and Allah remembers them before those who are with Him."
So remember Allah along with your loved ones so that your home can be surrounded by angels and always be at peace.

It is important to eat and drink right during Sehri (Suhoor), in order to survive the long and hot summer fasts. Sehri is an important part of keeping a fast, and thus should not be skipped.

It is important to indulge in a hydrating and nourishing Sehri to give our bodies the strength to make it through the fast. Unfortunately, many people are starting to skip Sehri in order to sleep in longer. However, doing this, they are missing out on the rewards and blessings that come with this important part of keeping a fast.

Be sure to include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy.

Here are some quick and easy options:

DRINKS

SMOOTHIES/MILKSHAKES
There are so many different options for making a smoothie depending on what you have at home. Personally, I love using frozen berries and spinach in mine!
    • Banana, Strawberry, Peach: granola, nuts, greek yogurt, chia seeds
    • Mixed Berry: blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, spinach
    • Mango: mangoes, yogurt, milk, banana
    • Banana-Peanut Butter: bananas, peanut butter, nonfat milk, honey

    FRUIT JUICE
Drinking pure fruit and vegetable juice is a great alternative to water in the morning. It's high in vitamins, that you won't be getting otherwise, due to fasting. You can either buy these pre-made, or make some with a juicer the night before.

INFUSED WATER
If you're someone who enjoys water, you can always infuse it with fruits, in order to drink more. Some great options are:
        • Watermelon & Mint
        • Orange, Lemon & Lime
        • Lime, Kiwi & Strawberry
        • Strawberry, Mint & Lemon

PRE-MADE IDEAS

PROTEIN SHAKE MUFFINS
It can be hard to get protein in during Ramadan. An easy way to include some protein in your Sehri is to make a batch of protein muffins! This is a great snack and easy to prepare ahead of time.

Here are several options.
Click the links for some of my favourite recipes!
  • Banana Bread Protein Muffins - for the banana bread lover
  • Cinnamon Role Protein Muffins - for the cinnamon bun lover
  • Chocolate Mocha Protein Muffins - for the brownie lover

OATMEAL
Oatmeal is full of carbohydrates and protein which will boost your energy for the day ahead. It's also full of fibre, calcium and potassium, which is great for the heart! This can also be made the night before, and served cold or warm for Sehri!

Here are several options.

  • 8 Classic Overnight Oats Recipes
    • Classic (my favourite)
    • Chocolate Peanut Butter
    • Carrot Cake
    • Banana Chocolate Chip
    • Tropical Fruit
    • Strawberry Cheesecake
    • Pumpkin Spice
    • Chocolate Coconut

OMELETTE  MUFFINS
For someone with less of a sweet tooth, omelette muffins are a great way to incorporate eggs and vegetables into Sehri. Here is my recipe for making these:

Serves 12
Ingredients:
  • 12 - 15 eggs
  • ground pepper and salt (to taste)
  • Any toppings you prefer: cheese, green pepper, onion, broccoli, red/green pepper, mushrooms etc.
Steps:
  • Preheat oven to 375 F.
  • Spray your muffin tray or use 12 muffin liners.
  • Finely chop your vegetables.
  • Divide the vegetables evenly (fill 2/3 of the liners)
  • Beat the eggs in a bowl, pour into something with a spout, and pour into the trays (fill 3/4 of the liners).
  • Top off with your favourite spices!
  • Bake 25-35 minutes, until muffins have risen and are slightly brown, and set.
  • Muffins can be refrigerated for no more than a week. Microwave on high for about 45 seconds to one minute before serving. (Egg muffins can be frozen and reheated but I like them better when they are refrigerated. Frozen muffins will release some water when they thaw).

FOOD

BREAKFAST CASSEROLE
This is a quick and easy way to have a filling breakfast full of dairy, protein, vegetables and grains!
Click here for one of my favourite recipes!
This recipe can easily be substituted for vegetables and meat you have access to in the moment. It's also a good recipe for larger families, serving 10-12.

OVEN-ROASTED BREAKFAST POTATOES
This is a nice savoury breakfast which will keep you full for quite some time. It's also not too time consuming, just let it bake while your praying or reading the Qur'an in the morning.

BREAKFAST SANDWICHES
You can never go wrong with a quick and easy sandwich! Here is a list of recipes for sandwiches for the meat lovers... or the veggie lovers...and anything in between!

WRAPS
If you enjoy wraps, I have a recipe for you! It consists of salsa, black beans, avocado, corn, and more!

Hopefully these recipes help you decide what to eat for sehri this Ramadan so that you can change it up! It can be hard waking up early to prepare a large sehri, nonetheless, there are some who are willing to do this, and so I've added several recipes for such people. On the other hand, some people wake up a few minutes before Fajr, and for these people I've included several breakfast ideas that can be made in advance and eaten quickly, yet still keep one full throughout the day.

May Allah bless you this Ramadan and forgive your sins, Ameen!

Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Decree or Power is a night when Allah showers His Mercy and Blessings on His sincere and faithful servants. It is a night, when Allah looks down at His servants in a special way. And we (the servants) are more inclined to worship Him and seek forgiveness from Him, in these last ten days as well.

Allah states in the Holy Qur'an in Chapter 97, Al-Qadr:
Surely, We sent it down on the Night of Destiny. [97:2]
And what should make thee know what the Night of Destiny is? [97:3]
The Night of Destiny is better than a thousand months. [97:4]
Therein descend angels and the Spirit by the command of their Lord - with every matter. [97:5]
It is all peace till the rising of the dawn. [97:6]

From the above verses we are told that this night is greater than a thousand months. Although it doesn't say greater than, we know that 1000 is the highest numerical figure in Arabic, thus signifying greater than 1000 months. On this night, angels descend upon the Earth.

This concept can be understood better through the words of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II (ra) who writes in Tafseer-e-Kabeer that [97:5] means:
"...the Angels of God descend to meet and satisfy every religious need and to remove all obstacles and impediments from the way of the expansion and spread of the new Message." [Tafseer-e-Kabeer, Page 2856]

The Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) said that an important point found in Surah Al-Qadr is that Laylatul Qadr could also mean that when mankind is in severe need of Allah, He responds to this need by sending a new reformer. This can be linked to the following saying of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him):
"Verily God will continue for ever to raise for this Ummat in the beginning of every century one who Will restore for it its faith." [Abu Dawud, Kitabul Fitan]

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) has also stated:
"Whosoever establishes the prayer on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards then all his past sins will be forgiven." [Bukhari]
and:
"Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." [Bukhari]

It is necessary for each and every believer to increase his/her worship during the last ten days of Ramadan and pray sincerely to benefit from the night of Laylatul Qadr. The reason that we are not told which night Laylatul Qadr falls on, is simply so that we worship Allah all of the ten days, rather than just the one night (Laylatul Qadr). We must also remember that we should worship Allah all through Ramadan and not only the last ten days in order to experience Laylatul Qadr.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) would spend the last ten days striving hard in the worship of Allah with an unimaginable effort. He directed his family to do the same. This was the model he established for us, and we must strive to do the same in our homes.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) told Hadhrat Aisha (ra) to recite the following prayer on Laylatul Qadr:

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tu hibul 'afwa fa 'fu 'anni
O Allah! You are the Great Pardoner, You love to pardon. Hence I seek Your pardon.
[Ibn Maja, Kitabul Duaa]

We must remember that the concentration on worship in search of Laylatul Qadr in the last ten days of Ramadan to make up for a lifetime worth of worship takes away from the objective of our creation (to worship Allah). Also, if one believes that he has experienced Laylatul Qadr, and therefore does not need to worship Allah anymore is misled. In fact, experiencing this night makes one an even more committed servant of Allah.

Allah reminds us each year in Ramadan to seek beneficence from this new day and to continue to raise our levels of spirituality. May we each engage in the sincerest worship of Allah during these last ten days of Ramadan to gain utmost blessings, Ameen!

During Ramadan, I've noticed that many people tend to drink glasses upon glasses of water at Sehri and then Iftar. Many times during Sehri, those who are fasting try to drink as much water as they can before Fajr. Whereas, during Iftar, those who are opening their fast drink glasses of water to get rid of their thirst. For this reason, I wanted to redirect you to the following Hadiths:

TAKE THREE BREATHS WHILE DRINKING:

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (he used to drink in three gulps). [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

DO NOT BLOW IN YOUR DRINK:

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited us blowing in the drinking water. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Sometimes I see some litter floating about on the surface. What should I do then?" He (peace be upon him) replied, "Pour them out." Then the man said: "My thirst is not quenched with one draught." Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Then put away the cup from your mouth (in between gulps), and take breath." [Tirmidhi]

AVOID DRINKING STANDING UP:

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's apostle (peace be upon him) disapproved the drinking of water while standing up. [Sahih Muslim]

WHOEVER SERVES THE WATER SHOULD BE THE LAST TO DRINK:

Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "He who serves other with drinking water should be the last to drink himself." [Tirmidhi]

DO NOT DRINK WHILE LYING DOWN & DRINK WITH TWO HANDS:

It was narrated from 'Asim bin Muhammad bin Zaid bin 'Abdullah, from his father, that his grandfather said:
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade us to drink while (lying) on our bellies, lapping up water, and he forbade us to drink from one hand only. He said: 'None of you should lap up water as a does does, and he should not drink water from on hand has the people with whom Allah is angry do, and he should not drink from a vessel at night without stirring it first, unless the vessel was covered. Whoever drinks from his hand when he is able to drink from a vessel, with the intention of humility, Allah will record good deeds equivalent to the number of fingers for him. It (i.e., the hand) is the vessel of 'Eisa bin Maryam, (as) when he threw away the cup and said: 'Ugh! That belongs to this world."

All of these Hadith's allow one to be thankful (say Alhamdulillah) before and after drinking the water and allow us to take time to drink. Personally, I believe that the more Hadith one knows, the more they are able to follow what Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said. By doing so, we are doing more of what pleases Allah.

I pray that we are all able to follow the Hadiths' that I've mentioned above to the best of our abilities, Ameen!
