Should Muslims celebrate Halloween?
How is it perceived in Islam?
What can parents do to help?

These are just some of the questions I hope to answer in this post.

WHERE DID THIS HOLIDAY COME FROM?

Halloween originates from old Irish pagan practices. It was believed that on October 31st, supernatural forces gathered in the human world. Supposedly, the lord of the dead gathered all the souls of the dead from the previous year who dwelled in animals, and would announce which animal the souls would dwell in, in the coming year.

TRICK-OR-TREATING

It is said that if a household gives something to a costume-clad child, the dead will not harm their household.

ISLAM'S PERSPECTIVE

Shirk, Shirk, Shirk. (idolatry)

No matter how 'fun' this day may look to be, it is wrong for a Muslim child to dress up in a strange manner and beg at the door of strangers - even if it may just be for candy.

Halloween sends across the message that it is 'okay' to believe in witches, evil spirits, and satanic worship. By trying to please these dead spirits, as if, equal to God, it is definitely a form of shirk/idolatry. Moreover, Islam believes that spirits cannot come back from the dead, nor can they be reborn in any form (eg. animals) in this world. As a Muslim, do not try to mix in with the West and get embroiled in hidden shirk/idolatry.

The Qur'an says:
"When it is said unto them, 'Come to what Allah has revealed, come to the Messenger,' they say, 'Enough for us are the ways we found our fathers following.' What! Even though their fathers were void of knowledge and guidance?" (Qur'an 5:105)

HALLOWEEN TODAY

Nowadays, Halloween is a holiday that is being abused by older children as a way to frighten people in their homes, disrespect elders, and cause disturbances. Thus, Muslim children should instead increase their connection with God.

Many people start following practices that they see practiced in society without thinking. Carelessly, some Muslims parents let their children participate in these traditions without any thought to its origin. But as Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (aba) has stated, "any 'fun' that is based on shirk is to be avoided".

6 TIPS FOR PARENTS

It can be difficult for a child to fully grasp the reason he/she is not allowed to dress up or go trick-or-treating - especially in the West! Children see their classmates in costumes, and may feel left-out if they are unable to do the same. I've compiled a list of a few actions that parents can take, to ensure that they can help their children better understand the reason for not celebrating Halloween.

  1. Get The Facts - Parents should know where Halloween originated from and why it is harmful so that they are able to explain it to their children (I hope this post has helped with that!).
  2. Unity - Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page! The last thing you want is for one partner to be explaining the reason Halloween is harmful, while the other spouse counters their arguments!
  3. Explain the Facts - Children are smarter than you think! When children ask "why," a simple, "because you can't!" will not suffice! You need to explain all the facts, as stated in this post!
  4. Accept Reality - Children will compare themselves to other Muslim families who perhaps do celebrate Halloween. It is important that you explain to them that every family does things differently, it does not mean their decision is right for your family!
  5. Get Their Mind Off Halloween - If you and your child agree, keep them home from school on Halloween. Instead, do activities with them to get their mind off of what they feel they may be missing out on. Remind them that they are not missing out on anything!
  6. Build Up the Excitement for Islamic Holidays - Living in the West, it is hard to avoid the excitement for Western holidays. Sometimes it looks as if Halloween and Christmas decor is literally everywhere. It seems that everyone is talking about their costumes on Halloween or presents on Christmas. For this reason, it is important for parents to ensure that there is an excitement being built up at home for the children to know Eid is coming up. It is not necessary for you to spoil them with presents or adopt new traditions. However, don't make them feel as if the other holidays are 'better' just because they live in the West.

I hope these tips are helpful for all the Muslim parents who are trying to teach their children the way of Islam!

May Allah safeguard us from getting caught in any form of Shirk, and may we avoid anything that displeases Him, Ameen.

Post wedding/marriage blues are very real. Sadly, they're not something that's really talked about. However, blues can often lead to depression, making it a serious topic to address. Unfortunately, the discussion of depression is quite taboo in our culture.
This is why I believe it's an important topic to write about.

For many girls I know, they didn't even know the 'blues' existed until they experienced them for themselves.

For those who haven't experienced it, it can feel kind of like this:
You're very happy because you've married the love of your life; You're so grateful to get to spend the rest of your lives together; You feel sad knowing that your wedding is now over; There are random days when you're down but don't know why; It's scary to think that your life has forever changed; You feel guilty for feeling the way that you do; You miss your family; But despite all of this, you couldn't be happier.

Confusing, I know. But anyone who has experienced them can sum them up the same way.

So why do we go through, 'Post Wedding Blues/Depression' and how can we deal with it?

Anti-Climactic:
On average, couples spend months to over a year, planning the wedding of their dreams. This consists of constant appointments, errands, and things to do. Suddenly, all of the planning, attention and excitement is over.
  • Change Your Perspective: This is why we must change our perspectives. Don't think of your wedding as the climax. Avoid thoughts such as, "I put everything into planning a wedding, and now it's over." Instead, look at the wedding as the beginning of your lives together. You're fortunate to have married your partner whom you get to spend the rest of your life with, Insha'Allah.

Loneliness:
Many brides get married off into their husbands families and have to live in a joint family for some time. Others move straight into a separate house with their husband. For myself, the loneliness stemmed from living alone with my husband. For someone who had grown up with 3 other siblings, I had become so used to having family around. And so, spending the majority of the day alone in an empty house became quite depressing.

  •  Social Engagements: Don't isolate yourself completely from your family and friends, Yes, your partner should now be your priority; but, when you can, make time for your family and friends. Invite them over for dinner or go over to their homes. If you stop meeting everyone completely, it can really put you down; especially, if you're a very people-oriented person.
  • Hobbies: Everyone has a different activities that bring them peace. For myself, it was reading and improving myself. Among this was rereading "Hazrat Amman Jan (ra)" in order to make myself a better wife, daughter and mother (Insha'Allah). This not only helped me kill time but also let me gain religious knowledge, leading to more inner peace.

Responsibilities:
For many, marriage can be an overwhelming shift from minimal responsibility to all the responsibility. You now have to divide up all the household responsibilities amongst yourselves. There's also a financial burden of having to deal with daily expenses. Basically, you now need to 'hardcore adult'. For someone with minimal experience doing tasks, this can be quite difficult.

  • Experience: Girls, I know your mothers are always saying "Learn to cook! Learn to clean!" and I'm sorry to be the one to say this, but mother's are always right. Having experience doing things around the home can make the transition into marriage a whole lot easier! You won't be dealing with the emotional transition in to marriage alongside trying to cook a proper meal, do the laundry, or clean. And so, these responsibilities will feel a lot less stressful.

Just remember, marriage is the start of an amazing journey with your best friend! Before your marriage, during your marriage, and after your marriage,  continue to pray with each other and for each other. Once the blues have died down and you've become comfortable with this new 'normal', Insha'Allah your life will be better than you could have ever imagined. But remember, just like your life before marriage had good days, bad days, exciting days and boring days...your life after marriage will too. This does not mean that marriage is to blame. Life wouldn't be life without its ups and downs. But Insha'Allah you experience many more ups than you do downs.

I suggest the following prayer to all of you:

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَاماً

Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyatina qurrata a`yunin wa’j`alna li’l muttaqina imama.

“Our Lord! Grant unto us spouses and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous.” [Qur’an, 25:74]

Most couples experience the 'blues' after marriage. Please keep in mind that the blues are short term and have different symptoms. If, however, they lead to depression like symptoms, I advise you to seek medical help!

Blues:

  • Sadness, 'empty' feeling
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
  • Restlessness

Depression:

  • Fatigue
  • Inability to sleep
  • Feeling worthless
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

If you experience the symptoms of depression for five or more recurring days you may have depression. Your doctor can help screen you for depression and help you manage and treat your symptoms so you feel better.

I pray that may Allah bless all of you with amazing life partners and bless your marriages, Ameen.

If you've ever experienced PWD, leave your experience in the comments below!

Anger is a completely normal emotional state, however, we must learn how to control it before it controls us. When angry, we tend to respond with aggression in order to defend ourselves. But it’s important to remember that just as a fire cannot be extinguished by pouring fuel into it, requiring water; anger cannot be extinguished with aggression, requiring calmness and tolerance.

As believers, we are constantly trying to develop positive habits and shun negative habits in order to please our Creator. Allāh says in the Holy Qur’ān in Sūrah Aal-e-‘Imran: “Those who spend in prosperity and in adversity, and those who suppress anger and pardon men; and Allāh loves those who do good” (3:135). From this verse it is clear that anger is not a trait that will ever please Allāh. If we wish to attain the love of Allah, it is important to learn how to rid ourselves of this negative trait.

STEP 1: SEEK ALLAH'S PROTECTION
The first step in controlling our anger is seeking protection from Allāh against Satan. It is narrated by Sulaiman bin Surd that while sitting in the company of Prophet Muhammadsa two men abused each other and the face of one of them became red with anger, and his jugular veins swelled. On that Muhammadsa said, “I know a word the saying of which will cause him to relax, if he does say it. If he says “I seek refuge with Allah from Satan’ then all his anger will go away”.[1] If we think about these words of the Prophetsa, we would think that this is quite easy to do. But remember, a state of anger may be the hardest time for us to say these words, since in that moment pausing and remembering Allāh may never cross our minds.

STEP 2: REMAIN SILENT
The second step in controlling our anger is to remain silent. The Messenger sa of Allāh said, “If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent”[2]. The reason being, that in anger we say things that we later regret. By remaining silent, we are given a chance to sit back, reflect on the incident, and come back to it with a clear mind.

We must remember that anger combines all kinds of evil; therefore by ridding ourselves of anger, we are safeguarding ourselves from other sins. This is why, when a man asked; “O Messengersa of Allāh, advise me”, the Messengersa  said, “Do not get angry”[3]. Even when the man repeated this several times, the Messengersa had the same reply, “Do not get angry”[4].

Unfortunately, nowadays, anger is such a normal response used daily by some, which can create tension in the lives of the individuals involved. This is why it is important that we develop the habit of being patient and even-minded. This will not only create a positive life for our loved ones, and us but also bring us closer to Allāh.

OUR ROLE MODEL
Let’s look at our current Khalifaaba as a role model for us. In his Friday Sermon on October 10th, 2014 he stated, “I do not have personal enmity with anyone. Some people write letters to me filled with abuse but I never feel any anger towards them”.  This is the response that we too should have when faced with a stressful situation or person. Instead of abusive language or hatred for the opposite party, we should approach them with love and patience.

May Allāh enable us to control our anger in any situation that comes our way so that we may attain His love, Ameen!

Weather you're planning on wearing the Hijab in the future, or already wear one but need a little motivation to continue to do so, I hope that this post helps you with your Hijab journey. If you currently wear a Hijab and are as comfortable and motivated as can be, Mash’Allah, you’re very blessed to be at that level!

With the negativity in the world regarding Muslims, it can be a little overwhelming to continue to feel as motivated to wear the Hijab. Don’t feel bad. It takes a lot of strength to continue with as much confidence when the world is constantly throwing negative views your way. But, you must not forget to open your eyes to those who embrace Hijab and find it beautiful.

I hope that the following tips can help you gain back your confidence or give you the confidence to embrace it one day, Insha’Allah.

1. Rethink Your Intentions
Why did you start wearing the Hijab? Why do you want to start wearing the Hijab? Is it to please your parents? To please another person? If you're wearing the Hijab to please anyone other than Allah, it will become a lot more difficult for you to continue wearing it. On the other hand, if you're wearing it for Allah and only Allah, you can remind yourself of this. Remind yourself that your purpose for wearing the Hijab is solely to please your Creator. With this in mind, it will become a lot easier for you to keep it on, since you know full well that as a Muslim, your goal in life is to please your Creator. However, if you try to wear it for someone else, you will be more inclined to take it off when your views regarding that person change. So the first step is to rethink your reasoning behind wearing the Hijab, and Insha'Allah it's only to please Allah.

2. Pray for Guidance
It can be overwhelming living in a country, going to a school, or working in a place where your peers don't embrace Hijab with open arms. Remember, whatever strength we have to overcome any obstacle in our lives, is only through prayer. So pray to Allah to give you the strength to continue wearing the Hijab. Pray for courage to face those who are against Hijab with confidence. Insha'Allah your prayers will bring you peace of mind and all the strength you need to wear the Hijab.

3. Experiment with Patterns/Colours
Wearing the Hijab doesn't have to be boring. Experiment with different patterns and colours to find what you like best. Having a few favourite Hijabs, that you know you can count on when you're having a 'Bad Hijab Day' is a total life saver! So experiment until you find something you love! Trust me, sometimes wearing a certain Hijab can make you feel 10x more confident.

4. Inspiring Women
Look in the media, there's so many amazing women who have accomplished so much while wearing the Hijab. Look to them for inspiration. Ibtihaj Muhammad, a Muslim-American fencer in the Rio 2016 Olympics, has recently become an inspiration, along with many others.

Remind yourself, that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to, and a Hijab won't put a limit on it.

Insha'Allah, these little tips can help you regain your motivation and confidence while wearing the Hijab.

1. Pray Your Salat
The importance of Salat has been emphasized in the Qur'an countless times. Allah has stressed that Muslims offer Salat regularly in order to achieve the benefits that come with it.

  • Gain Nearness to Allah: With prayer, we can develop a bond with our Creator and learn to pray to thank Allah and seek help during difficult times.
  • Taqwa: Piety or righteousness is achieved through Salat. This is because Salat keeps us away from wrongdoing, ensuring that we learn to do what's right in order to please Allah.
  • Reward in the Hereafter: The Prophet (pbuh) said, "The first thing the people will be accountable for on the Day of Judgement is prayer, Allah will say to His angels: "Look at my servants prayers. Were they complete or not?" If they were complete It will be written as complete. If they were not fully complete Allah will say: "See if my servant has voluntary prayers, If he has them Allah will Say: Complete his obligatory prayers shortage with his voluntary prayers." Then the rest of his deeds will be dealt with in the same manner", (Reported by Abu Dawood).
  • Protection from Satan: Satan is an enemy of the believers and tries to stray them from their path of righteousness. Not offering prayer is actually a sign of us following Satan, whereas those who offer prayer are resisting temptation from Satan.
Thus, if we don't pray, we are not preparing ourselves for the first question Allah will ask us on the Day of Judgement. Also, we are missing out on the benefits that Salat has on us in this life.

2. Stay in a State of Wudu
It has been related in a narration from Ibn Umar that the Prophet (pbuh) said: "Whoever performs Wudu while in a state of purity, Allah writes for him on account of it ten good merits". (Tirmidhi)

Moreover, the Prophet (pbuh) said, "When any of you sleeps, Satan ties three knots at the back of his  neck. He recites the incantation at every knot: 'You have a long night, so sleep.' If he awakes and remembers Allah, one knot is loosened. If he performs Wudu' the (second) knot is loosened; and if he performs prayer, (all) knots are loosened. He begins his morning in a happy  and refreshed mood; otherwise, he gets up in bad spirits and sluggish state". (Narrated by Abu Huraira - Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Thus, it is important that we not only remain in a state of Wudu so we can pray whenever we need to and remain clean. But also, to please Allah and gain blessings from our purified state.

3. Fast
Since it is Ramadan right now, you are probably aware of the commandment of fasting and why it is important to us as Muslims. If not, you can read my post by clicking here.

It is narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet (pbuh) said that Allah said, "Every good deed of Adam's son is for him except fasting, it is for Me, and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.' Verily, the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better to Allah than the smell of musk".

While fasting, we are in a state of remembering Allah, and doing something to please no one but Allah. Allah will reward us for fasting, and so it is important to fast regularly.

4. Perform Good Deeds
Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, "Verily, those who believe and do good works - surely, We suffer not the reward of those who do good works to be lost. It is these who will have Gardens of Eternity beneath which streams shall flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade, reclining therein upon raised couches. How good the reward and how excellent the place of rest!" (Holy Qu'rna 18:31-32).

And so, it is important that we do good deeds in this world, in order to impact the lives of those less around us, and making the world a better place. But also, to gain Allah's pleasure.

5. Make Istighfar
All of us have shortcomings. All of us have done something which displeased please Allah. This is okay. We were made humans, not angels. BUT, we must ask Allah for forgiveness many times a day. We don't want to die having displeased Allah and not seeking forgiveness for it.

In the Holy Qur'an, Istighfar is seen as drawing the strength and support of Allah which leads to attaining nearness to Allah and salvation. The Holy Qur'an states:
But surely the righteous will be in the midst of gardens and springs, receiving what the Lord will give them; for they used to do good before that. They used to sleep but a little of the night; and at the dawn of the day they sought forgiveness...[51:16-19]

If you want to know more about Istighfar click here.

We must always think about death, as it is our short time in this world that will determine what happens in the Hereafter. May we all make ourselves better individuals and better Muslims who will please Allah with our actions and character, Ameen!

The atmosphere and environment of the home that you and your family spend long hours of the day and night in, can greatly influence your behaviour, habits, and family life. A stress-filled home with little remembrance of Allah is neither good for you or your family/kids. Remembering Allah during the day and night is something that we are reminded to do in the Qur'an:

To ensure that we are abiding by Allah's command, and not letting the things of this world divert our attention from Him, it is important to create a home where the remembrance of Allah and His people is given great importance.

Below are 5 simple ways to remember Allah throughout the day and create a peaceful, spiritually bliss home:

1. Designated Worship Room/Area:

Many of our homes are filled with pictures, wall-art, TVs and other distractions. Thus, setting aside a room/area of the home that has none of these distractions, rather access to the material needed to worship and remember Allah (i.e. a Prayer mat, Qur'an), is a great way to stay focused while praying or reading the Qur'an. Moreover, passing by this room/area can serve as a reminder to pray and remember Allah.

2. Islamic Library:

In the Holy Qur'an, Allah has commanded us to constantly seek knowledge. As well, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) advised us to:
'Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave'.
The only way to do this, is to have access to the resources needed for attaining this knowledge within our reach. Nowadays, so many Islamic books are available online (i.e. ebooks), and so having a hard copy is not necessary. However,  having hard copies of a few key books (i.e. prayer books, commentaries of the Qur'an, etc.) is a good idea. The attention and focus you will have on a book that's in your hand, will far exceed an electronic copy, due to several other distractions. It's also a good way to rest your eyes and write notes on the books to better understand the content. Also, if you have young children, having kids Islamic books on these shelves will teach them how to rely on these books for knowledge. Reading these books will help you gain knowledge on living a better life.

3. Written Reminders:

More often than not, we know the words to many prayers along with when they should be recited. However, we sometimes forget to recite them due to the distractions in our homes. Pasting prayers around your house is a great way to remind yourself when a prayer should be recited. By pasting them on doors, mirrors etc. you are not only reminding yourself, but also your children to remember Allah. Moreover, reading/seeing these prayers everyday will help you and your kids memorize them, if you haven't already.

4. Get Rid of Negative Noise:

Nowadays, every home has a television, laptop/tablet, and phone. Sometimes, it is important to set these aside. Turn off your drama's, music, etc. so that you and your children can communicate, and not take in the negativity that comes with these noises (i.e. swearing, vulgarity etc.).  Silence will not only let you think and be at peace with yourself, but it's also a great way to clear your mind. A substitute to the dramas/music are: Islamic podcasts, poetry, the recitation of the Holy Qur'an etc. all of which ease your stress, and create a peaceful vibe at home.

5. Lead By Example:

With all of the above said, it is very important to live by example. Read your prayers on time, recite the Qur'an, constantly pray to Allah, stay calm, don't raise your voice, etc.  By keeping yourself absorbed in the remembrance of Allah, and living your life following Allah's commands, you will be a role model for your parents, siblings, spouse and children. On the other hand, if you listen to foul music, watch inappropriate TV shows, yell, never remember Allah, and remain stressed, your home will never attain peace. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Each of you is a sheperd, and each of you is responsible for his flock...A man is a sheperd in charge of the inhabitants of his household and he is responsible for his flock; a women is a sheperdess in charge  of her husband's house and children and she is responsible for them..."
Remember, it was narrated by Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa'eed that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said
"No people sit in a gathering remembering Allah, But the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them and Allah remembers them before those who are with Him."
So remember Allah along with your loved ones so that your home can be surrounded by angels and always be at peace.

It is important to eat and drink right during Sehri (Suhoor), in order to survive the long and hot summer fasts. Sehri is an important part of keeping a fast, and thus should not be skipped.

It is important to indulge in a hydrating and nourishing Sehri to give our bodies the strength to make it through the fast. Unfortunately, many people are starting to skip Sehri in order to sleep in longer. However, doing this, they are missing out on the rewards and blessings that come with this important part of keeping a fast.

Be sure to include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy.

Here are some quick and easy options:

DRINKS

SMOOTHIES/MILKSHAKES
There are so many different options for making a smoothie depending on what you have at home. Personally, I love using frozen berries and spinach in mine!
    • Banana, Strawberry, Peach: granola, nuts, greek yogurt, chia seeds
    • Mixed Berry: blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, spinach
    • Mango: mangoes, yogurt, milk, banana
    • Banana-Peanut Butter: bananas, peanut butter, nonfat milk, honey

    FRUIT JUICE
Drinking pure fruit and vegetable juice is a great alternative to water in the morning. It's high in vitamins, that you won't be getting otherwise, due to fasting. You can either buy these pre-made, or make some with a juicer the night before.

INFUSED WATER
If you're someone who enjoys water, you can always infuse it with fruits, in order to drink more. Some great options are:
        • Watermelon & Mint
        • Orange, Lemon & Lime
        • Lime, Kiwi & Strawberry
        • Strawberry, Mint & Lemon

PRE-MADE IDEAS

PROTEIN SHAKE MUFFINS
It can be hard to get protein in during Ramadan. An easy way to include some protein in your Sehri is to make a batch of protein muffins! This is a great snack and easy to prepare ahead of time.

Here are several options.

  • Banana Bread Protein Muffins - for the banana bread lover
  • Cinnamon Role Protein Muffins - for the cinnamon bun lover
  • Chocolate Mocha Protein Muffins - for the brownie lover

OATMEAL
Oatmeal is full of carbohydrates and protein which will boost your energy for the day ahead. It's also full of fibre, calcium and potassium, which is great for the heart! This can also be made the night before, and served cold or warm for Sehri!

Here are several options.

    • Carrot Cake
    • Banana Chocolate Chip
    • Tropical Fruit
    • Strawberry Cheesecake
    • Pumpkin Spice
    • Chocolate Coconut

OMELETTE  MUFFINS
For someone with less of a sweet tooth, omelette muffins are a great way to incorporate eggs and vegetables into Sehri. Here is my recipe for making these:

Serves 12
Ingredients:
  • 12 - 15 eggs
  • ground pepper and salt (to taste)
  • Any toppings you prefer: cheese, green pepper, onion, broccoli, red/green pepper, mushrooms etc.
Steps:
  • Preheat oven to 375 F.
  • Spray your muffin tray or use 12 muffin liners.
  • Finely chop your vegetables.
  • Divide the vegetables evenly (fill 2/3 of the liners)
  • Beat the eggs in a bowl, pour into something with a spout, and pour into the trays (fill 3/4 of the liners).
  • Top off with your favourite spices!
  • Bake 25-35 minutes, until muffins have risen and are slightly brown, and set.
  • Muffins can be refrigerated for no more than a week. Microwave on high for about 45 seconds to one minute before serving. (Egg muffins can be frozen and reheated but I like them better when they are refrigerated. Frozen muffins will release some water when they thaw).

FOOD

BREAKFAST CASSEROLE
This is a quick and easy way to have a filling breakfast full of dairy, protein, vegetables and grains!

OVEN-ROASTED BREAKFAST POTATOES
This is a nice savoury breakfast which will keep you full for quite some time. It's also not too time consuming, just let it bake while your praying or reading the Qur'an in the morning.

BREAKFAST SANDWICHES
You can never go wrong with a quick and easy sandwich! Here is a list of recipes for sandwiches for the meat lovers... or the veggie lovers...and anything in between!

WRAPS

Hopefully these recipes help you decide what to eat for sehri this Ramadan so that you can change it up! It can be hard waking up early to prepare a large sehri, nonetheless, there are some who are willing to do this, and so I've added several recipes for such people. On the other hand, some people wake up a few minutes before Fajr, and for these people I've included several breakfast ideas that can be made in advance and eaten quickly, yet still keep one full throughout the day.

May Allah bless you this Ramadan and forgive your sins, Ameen!

Finals can be hectic and sometimes it may feel as if they will never come to an end. Trust me, I've been there. With 8 midterms for 6 weeks straight, I basically studied every day for 1 month straight. I know how stressful it can be! Finals were no different. So, before finals roll around for secondary school students, I thought I would share a few tips and tricks to help you all make your way through them. These tips are not only for you to be successful in your exams Insha'Allah, but also for you to not lose track of what's important.

1) MAKE A SCHEDULE

I thought this was a fairly normal thing to do, until I talked to some people who thought I was crazy.

"How can you follow a strict schedule?"

I guess being a Muslim, and having to follow a schedule ever single day (the 5 daily prayers) has something to do with it. For real! Prayer has helped me to self discipline myself in terms of what I should do and when I should do it. Keep in mind, your schedule cannot be 'Study from 7AM to Midnight', because you will never be able to stick to such a schedule. Make it realistic, reward yourself, and take breaks!

Start by creating an exam schedule for the entire week/month. For each day, write down the chapters for each course that you want to accomplish. My rule to divide up chapters for each course is as follows: If you have 10 chapters to study, and 5 days until the exam, study 2 chapters a day. Once you have this monthly schedule, you won't have to cram, and you'll know the minimum amount of studying you should get done each day. Once you have this, create a schedule every morning for the day. This should start from the moment you wake up to the time you wish to sleep at. In it, include the hours you will spend studying (with what you intend on studying from the weekly/monthly schedule), breaks, and meal times. This is a simple and effective way to keep your mind at ease, and not have to cram the night before the exam. I always get asked how I continue to make time to eat, sleep and everything in between, while staying on top of studying. Well, this right here is the answer to that!

2) DON'T CRAM

This goes hand-in-hand with what I stated above, scheduling. You've probably heard this a million times before, but cramming does nothing for you. It only leads to stress, and

studying + stress = burnout.

Try to plan out your time so that you start studying far in advance. Make your study load heavier early in the exam season because you will get tired of studying! Having fewer chapters to study closer to the exam date will be a huge weight lifted off your back! Make the day before the exam a review day! Don't spend that day studying the entire course! Remember, it's not about studying hard, it's about studying smart.

3) PRACTICE QUESTIONS & FLASHCARDS

The more times we see something, the better our brain is at remembering it. This is why cramming will not help. You want to study in advance and review everything you've studied already each day. Seeing a definition or concept multiple times will help you remember it way better than if you cram. To do this, flashcards are a great way to go! Flashcards made by hand can work really well, but may take a lot more time if your notes are typed out. I love Quizlet, it's a great way for you to not only make flashcards, but turn those flashcards into multiple choice questions, true and false questions, games and more. It's a great method that I like to use when it comes to formulas and terms - things I need to memorize.

Also, use the resources given to you! Textbooks have a bunch of review questions and you can find so many online! Use these resources so that you can learn to apply what you've studied. Knowing a term is one thing, but comparing that term with similar terms, or knowing how to set it apart from similar terms is what will help you succeed. Nowadays, teachers/professors are no longer testing students on memorization. There's a lot more case questions and such, that require the student to know more than just the definition of words.

4) PUT IN TIME FOR GOD

Sometimes it feels like we don't have enough hours in the day to study, and so it can be quite challenging to make time to pray. However, I assure you, success without prayer is not the right kind of success. Incorporate the prayers into your schedule, start your day off with Fajr and give yourself an early start to your studying. Finally end your day off with Ishaa, and go to sleep. This will really help you get 6-7 hours of sleep! Pray and ask Allah for help! This is not only the best stress reliever, but it's also a good way to force yourself to get up and move. I don't know about you, but when I'm studying, I feel like I sit for hours straight just trying to get information in my head. To prevent your body from getting soar, get up, move a little, and pray. And if you're worried about time still, 5-10 minutes will not harm your studying! Trust me :)

Some little prayers that are helpful for exams are:

رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًا

O my Lord! Increase me in knowledge.

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي

O my Lord! Expand me my breast; ease my task for me; and remove the impediment from my speech, so they may understand what I say.
I really hope these little tips help you plan out your finals week (or month) a little better, and I really hope you all succeed! Just remember, try your hardest and don't lose hope, one low mark doesn't ruin your life. Good Luck!
